Since 1977, Dexter Research Center has been the preferred provider of infrared thermopile detectors for science and industry. We offer standard detectors in high volumes – and we customize our detectors for specific needs.

Customers in the research, medical, automotive, aerospace, and security industries, among many others, now rely on us for the highest-performance detectors. We design and manufacture our detectors right here at our U.S. headquarters in Dexter, Michigan.

If a superior non-contact temperature sensor is what you seek, Dexter offers a superior performing Temperature Sensing Module that may be ordered up to medical-grade accuracy.

In all, we offer over 30 core thermopile thin-film and silicon-based products, more than all our global competitors combined. Each Dexter detector is 100% tested for industry-leading quality.

We also provide our customers a choice from over 1,000 thermopile configurations. And we have new thermopile detectors coming to market. These will enable us to continue supporting our current and new customers as they apply our products around the world.

Dexter Research Center is the global leader in the manufacture of high-quality, high-output Bismuth-Antimony thin film and silicon-based infrared sensing thermopile detectors. This leadership was achieved through collaboration between former defense scientists at Willow Run Labs and Robert “Bob” Toth, Ph.D, a materials and thin film expert who had previously worked for Ford Scientific Labs.

Willow Run Labs, a part of the Engineering Research Institute of the University of Michigan, attracted a cadre of world-renowned researchers and engineers to help design what eventually became known as the U.S. anti-ballistic missile system. Remote sensing then played, and continues to perform, a key role in this ultra-sophisticated defense system.

During the mid-1960s, at the time that Willow Run Labs was perfecting many of the U.S. military weapons systems that proved so successful in the first and second Gulf Wars, sensors were extraordinarily expensive. As work progressed, the potential commercial applications of sensor technology began to be recognized, but high unit costs remained a barrier to technology transfer.

From the perspectives of systems performance and cost, the customized applications of Dexter Research Center’s thermopile technology continue to be the preferred solutions to today’s burgeoning infrared detector market. Yet we know that we cannot rest on our good reputation.
